TWINVEST PROJECT

TWINVEST aims to create the foundations of a universal, open-source, and cyber-secure Digital Twin to provide investors in onshore wind farms with valuable information about current operations and future investments. Investment decisions in wind energy are complex as they involve various factors that need to be monitored or evaluated, such as energy production, maintenance, investment framework, and wind farm characteristics. To overcome these different factors, a team of 14 partners came together to create a Digital Twin that seamlessly integrates and considers all of these factors. This Digital Twin will have several platforms:

i) Investment conditions platform, focusing on the basic grid requirements required for energy storage, energy demand and pricing dynamics, regulatory mechanisms, and ancillary services;

ii) Component platform for CAPEX estimation of investment, focusing on the different components used for the nominal energy production of turbines;

iii) Environment & Earth platform, aiming to assess the impact of weather and wind dynamics, resulting in the provision of real-time energy production projections; and

iv) Maintenance and risk platform that aims to optimize OPEX using predictive methodologies to predict potential system failures.
The project duration will be 42 months and will be structured in 3 phases:

Phase 1: Platform and model development phase, where research partners will develop, train and explore different AI models that will enable the investor to predict and monitor important factors in a wind farm;

Phase 2 (M6-M42): Digital Twin Integration phase, where the mentioned different platforms will be integrated, ensuring interoperability between all models;

Phase 3 (M25-M42): Individual Platforms and Digital Twin validation phase, where TWINVEST Digital Twin will be validated with real wind farms from the industry and will be used to conduct feasibility studies on investment plans from the industry to evaluate its capabilities.
